CAER Community Awareness Notification – Suncor Sarnia Refinery

August 4, 2022, 11:56 am

Incident Details: The Suncor Sarnia refinery is continuing the clean-up process following last night’s overflow of the refinery’s internal sewer system. The Eastern Canada Response Corporation (ECRC) attended the site this morning and conducted an assessment on the St. Clair River. No sheen was detected – it is believed the sheen quickly dissipated as a result of last night’s heavy rainfall and wind direction – and there was no evidence of material build-up along the shoreline. The overflow is no longer active as it was quickly diverted last night. There may be more periods of heavy rain today, so additional measures have been implemented, including increasing our ability to pump water and divert it to a safe holding area, to avoid any potential additional impacts to the River. We have been in close contact with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, the Spills Action Centre and downriver water users on both sides of the border to ensure they have timely information about this event and the clean-up process.
