CAER, IEC, SLEA recognized for pandemic preparedness contributions

Sarnia-Lambton Community Awareness and Emergency Response, Industrial Educational Cooperative, and the Sarnia-Lambton Environmental Association were recognized for their contributions to COVID-19 Pandemic Preparedness in December by the City of Sarnia and the Sarnia-Lambton Chamber of Commerce.

CAER, the IEC, and SLEA were recognized for their combined $40,000 donation to the City of Sarnia, which aided in the construction of a field hospital at Lambton College. Vince Gagner, General Manager of CAER, IEC, and SLEA, accepted the recognition from City of Sarnia Emergency Manager, Ron Realesmith, and Sarnia-Lambton Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Officer, Allan Calvert.

Realesmith and Calvert also recognized the Sarnia and District Labour Council, LiUNA Local 1089, Bluewater Power, BMO Nesbitt Burns, Toolrite Engineering, and Rock Technical Solutions for their contributions to the funding and construction of the field hospital.

The $40,000 donation made by CAER, the IEC, and SLEA was endorsed by their respective boards of directors and member companies, many of whom also made individual donations of money and personal protective equipment supplies to Bluewater Health in response to the outbreak of the pandemic last March.

While not required for use in the pandemic’s first wave, the portable field hospital gives the Sarnia-Lambton area the ability to respond to an increased demand for hospital beds should the need arise as pandemic response efforts continue.

“The local petrochemical industry is proud to contribute. While our companies are helping the community in their individual ways, it was important for us to collectively provide a meaningful show of support in Sarnia-Lambton,” said Gagner of the donation. “The industry is highly tuned into emergency response and working together towards health and safety, so the field hospital project was a natural fit for us from that perspective. We’re happy to help.”
