Suncor launches ReconcilliACTION Moments

September 28, 2021/By: Bluewater Association for Safety, Environment, and Sustainability

As part of the Bluewater Community Advisory Panel (BCAP), Bluewater Association for Safety, Environment, and Sustainability (BASES) companies regularly engage with each other and community members at regular meetings to discuss initiatives, learnings, and receive community feedback.

These meetings are regularly marked by individual companies sharing a ‘Safety Moment’, where an event or initiative at their operating site allowed them to reflect on their operations as it relates to the health and safety of their workers, the community, and the environment.

At the most recent BCAP meeting, BASES member company Suncor took its safety moment opportunity to share how they are taking steps towards truth and reconciliation with, among other things, ‘ReconciliACTION Moments’.

ReconciliACTION Moments are part of Suncor’s Journey of Reconciliation, which is aimed at progressing the way they think and act to build mutual trust and respect with Indigenous Peoples. These moments are a brief discussion on a topic related to Indigenous Peoples and communities and provide an opportunity to increase employee awareness and understanding of Indigenous history, traditions, experiences, and contributions.

In addition to ReconciliACTION Moments, employees can:

  • Participate in Journeys – an employee inclusion network run by employees interested in advancing Indigenous inclusion at Suncor, while creating a safe and supportive workplace for Indigenous employees;
  • Take web- based Indigenous Awareness training
  • Attend Canada’s History with Indigenous peoples classroom training
  • Participate in a cultural experience (e.g. KAIROS Blanket Exercise)

The Bluewater Association for Safety, Environment, and Sustainability recognizes the importance of advancing reconciliation in Canada and initiatives like ReconciliACTION Moments can act as a catalyst for important conversations and meaningful change.

We want to hear how you and your company are keeping the conversation moving forward. If your company is taking steps to make an impact regarding Truth and Reconciliation, we invite you to share them with us by emailing: [email protected].
