NOVA Chemicals has joined the Great Lakes Plastic Cleanup as the initiative’s lead corporate sponsor, pledging $200,000 to the project.
Great Lakes Plastic Cleanup is a first-of-its-kind initiative that uses innovative technology to quickly capture and remove plastics and other litter from waterways by working with marinas on the Great Lakes. NOVA Chemicals’ support of the project has brought this technology to the Andrew S. Brandt Marina at Sarnia Bay and Bridgeview Marina in Sarnia.
Founded by the Council of the Great Lakes Region, Pollution Probe, and Boating Ontario with support from corporate sponsors like NOVA Chemicals and various other partners, the Great Lakes Plastic Cleanup aims to supplement the cleanup efforts with a focus on public outreach, and education and awareness encouraging reducing, reusing and recycling.
Rob Thompson, Vice-President of Manufacturing, Ontario Operations for NOVA Chemicals said that “NOVA Chemicals is shaping a better tomorrow through a long-term commitment to sustainability. Plastics play a vital role in keeping us safe and healthy, but plastic absolutely does not belong in our lakes, oceans, or the environment. The Great Lakes Plastic Cleanup is a unique opportunity for us to combine our community support and sustainability efforts in a strategic, impactful, and meaningful way, and we are excited to work alongside our partners for sustained impact and long-term benefits to the environment locally and throughout the Province of Ontario.”
