Event Honouring the St. Clair River

September 30, 2024/By: Bluewater Association for Safety, Environment, and Sustainability

On September 26, 2024, the Friends of the St. Clair River held their 2nd annual Honouring the St. Clair River event. Nathan VanBelois, BASES Manager of Environmental Programs, gave updates on recent upgrades to the BASES downriver water monitoring station. This monitoring station is used by local industry and the Ministry of the Environment, Conservaton and Parks to track and assess water quality in the St. Clair River, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and supporting efforts to protect the river’s health and surrounding ecosystems. Plans are underway to make this data accessible to the public, complementing the existing local air monitoring network, which can be publicly accessed at www.cleanairsarniaandarea.com.

Attendees learned about progress on the St. Clair River Remedial Action Plan and future restoration efforts, as well as upcoming initiatives from Friends of the St. Clair River. The keynote address by Eden Hataley, a Ph.D. candidate in environmental science, focused on the impact of microplastics in the Great Lakes.

In Sarnia-Lambton we are incredibly fortunate to be surrounded by such beautiful freshwater resources, and it’s so great to see how much work is being done to preserve and protect for future generations. Thank you to the Canadian Remedial Action Plan Implementation Committee for organizing this informative event celebrating our local waterway.
