Suncor Sarnia Refinery Community Notification

Incident Details: Shortly after 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, the Suncor Sarnia refinery experienced an operational issue in one of its units. We issued a community notification to advise of the potential for periods of increased flaring and higher levels of noise. Sarnia Fire responded to the refinery to offer support. In the process of restoring the unit to normal operating state, a visible plume and potential odour may have been detected beyond the refinery fence line. Out of an abundance of caution, we sounded the site siren. Air monitoring data on the Clean Air Sarnia and Area web site shows elevated levels of SO2, and the community has been notified. We continue to work diligently to restart the affected units which will return the refinery to standard operations. Air monitoring both on and off-site is ongoing. All employees are safe and accounted for and no injuries have been reported. We have also provided information to the appropriate regulatory authorities and stakeholders.
