INEOS Community Notification

May 5, 2025, 10:52 am

Incident Details: INEOS Styrolution is notifying the community as a proactive precaution that hourly benzene emissions on-site have been detected above 0.021 parts-per million (67.5ug/m3). Monitoring data is being verified and the source(s) of elevated emissions are being actively investigated. Emissions reduction efforts will be identified and implemented if there is an abnormal operating condition at the site. This notification is preemptive, and no adverse effects are anticipated with these elevated readings. Additional notifications may occur, however there is no expected impact on the community. Note: INEOS Styrolution is not the only source of benzene in the area.INEOS Styrolution would like to notify the public and its industrial neighbours that we will begin benzene transfers via pipeline (Part A of the MECP approved benzene removal plan) and final emptying of the benzene tank (Part B of the MECP approved benzene removal plan) this week. Emissions controls are in place to capture/destruct benzene emissions from the transfer and emptying activities. Environmental modelling has confirmed there is no anticipated off-site impact above local targets and regulatory limits. While recognizing there is the potential for increased emissions, benzene removal is a requirement of ECA Amendment and site decommissioning. INEOS Styrolution remains dedicated to community and personnel safety and will continue to monitor onsite monitors as well as conduct increased handheld monitoring during this phase of the benzene removal plan. We will investigate any potential sources of unexpected benzene emissions and communicate additional information as required.
