March 25, 2022/By: Bluewater Association for Safety, Environment, and Sustainability

Community Awareness & Emergency Response (CAER) General Manager, Vince Gagner, recently presented to the Federal House of Commons’ Standing Committee on Transportation, Infrastructure, and Communities at the request of Sarnia-Lambton Member of Parliament, Marilyn Gladu.

CAER was asked to provide an update on rail safety in the Sarnia-Lambton area and spoke about the collaborative nature that exists between industry, local governments, building and construction trades and contributes to a high level of confidence in joint response capabilities in the region. Specific to rail safety, Gagner updated the Committee on companies that operate rail yards in Sarnia-Lambton and their membership in BASES which provides them direct access to technical experts from many industry sectors who are dedicated to jointly identifying and controlling hazards posed to public safety. Gagner also spoke to roll out of Community Awareness Notifications from local industry sites to the public to keep the public informed and how this model was based on the Aamjiwnaang First Nation design of sharing notifications with their residents.
