Staying Safe this Summer

Summer in Sarnia-Lambton is a time for beautiful weather, outdoor activities, and fun by the water. However, with recent heat warnings and our proximity to water, safety is paramount. Here are some essential tips to keep you and your loved ones safe this summer.
With rising temperatures, staying cool and hydrated is key to avoid heat-related illnesses. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and avoid excessive alcohol and caffeine. Take breaks in the shade or indoors during peak sun hours (10am-4pm). Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothes, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses. Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and reapply every two hours or more often if swimming or sweating. Stay cool indoors with fans or air conditioning, and visit air-conditioned public places or local cooling centres if your home is too hot. Be aware of heat illness symptoms like heavy sweating, dizziness, and nausea.
For water safety, swim only in areas supervised by lifeguards and be aware of local currents and active beach postings. Always have a buddy when swimming, especially in open water. Keep a constant eye on children near water, even if they know how to swim. Use properly fitted, approved life jackets for boating and other water sports, and avoid alcohol around water.
With the increase in inclement weather, it’s important to be prepared for extreme weather conditions. Identify a safe location to shelter in place if extreme winds, hail, or a tornado develops. At home, this might be a basement or an interior room without windows. At work, familiarize yourself with the building’s emergency procedures and designated safe areas. When traveling, know where to go for shelter, such as rest stops or sturdy buildings. Subscribe to Sarnia-Lambton Alerts to get real-time information and instructions during local emergencies.
Keep up-to-date with local weather advisories and heat warnings – follow Lambton Public Health for information about local risks and regional advisories.
Summer in Sarnia-Lambton is a wonderful time to enjoy outdoor activities and explore our region’s beauty. By following these safety tips, you can ensure a safe, healthy, and fun summer. Stay cool, stay safe, and make the most of this sunny season!
